Hormones are chemicals produced in glands, such as estrogen in ovaries and testosterone in testicles. In some cases, hormones help some types of cancer cells grow, such as the cancer cells in breast and prostate cancers. There are two main types of hormone therapies: anti-estrogen therapy and anti-androgen therapy. Anti-estrogen drugs block the ability of estrogen to stimulate the growth of breast-cancer cells. Anti-androgen drugs block the production or interfere with the action of the male sex hormones and may be used with other therapies in the treatment of prostate cancer.
