While surgery is the oldest form of cancer treatment, the recently developed technique of minimally invasive, video-assisted surgery makes it possible to remove tumors with smaller incisions, less bleeding, less pain and a shorter recovery period. The surgeon inserts a thin, flexible tube with a small video camera and a light in one incision. The surgeon watches the video image on a monitor while performing the surgery with tools inserted in a few other small incisions.
